"Why Breed Dogs, when so many are homeless?" For those people out there who believe no one should be breeding dogs… this is for you.
Animal shelters and people willing to rescue and rehabilitate are very necessary. Responsible breeders are equally necessary. We must quit fighting the battle of breeders vs rescues – when neither is a problem and both are essential. This is a call to action to educate your fellow pet owner. The casual pet owners - those people most likely to dump a dog at a shelter or produce an unintentional litter of mixed breed puppies. I am so sick of getting online and seeing any mention of breeding an animal being greeted by an immediate derogatory response. I don’t think people understand what they’re truly saying when they are discouraging someone from buying a dog by repeating slogans thrown around the media like “adopt, don’t shop” or “ For every dog you buy, a shelter dog will die”. First off – that second statement is far from the truth. If a family is looking for a specific breed puppy to suit their lifestyle – they won’t (and should NOT! ) settle for a shelter dog that doesn’t fit the bill just because their breed of choice isn’t available. Think about it.. If you are shopping for a brand new Corvette and the dealership has a long wait on them – are you going to go across the street and buy a used minivan? No, because that does not fit the bill of what will suit your lifestyle. That van may be too bulky for your garage, use more gas than you want to buy, and perform differently on the highway than you want. Shopping for that new puppy...
Wait until after puppy arrives to...
"We are individuals living across the United States who have been drawn together as volunteers for the sole purpose of preserving and protecting pure breed and non-pure breed Papillons in need. Working together we are making a difference - one Papillon at a time." Papillon Haven Rescue http://paphaven.org/ "We are a group of volunteers spread throughout the United States and Canada dedicated to helping blind and visually impaired dogs by: rescuing dogs in shelters, assisting blind dog owners, and educating the public about these wonderful dogs. Please look over our website, visit our blind dogs for adoption, read their stories, and we think you will agree that "blind dogs see with their hearts!". Blind Dog Rescue Alliance http://www.blinddogrescue.org/ Papillons are a unique breed - they go through stages like the butterfly they are named for. Papillons are born very small (3-5 oz). Their eyes stay closed for about 10 days and their ears are just small flaps of skin. They are toddling around at 3 weeks and wanting to 'taste' momma's food. I start the weaning process at 5-6 weeks. They grow fast becoming very cute, fat, wiggly little babies that love attention and give tons of kisses. Their ears sometimes go up right away, but will often stay down for several weeks as the puppy gains strength in their ears. Around 16-20 weeks they hit an awkward stage. Their fur gets thinner, their legs get longer, they look skinny with scrawny tails. Their coloring and spots change some. They are very active, wanting to run and play --coming back for loving once they are tired. They are teething a lot at this stage and need an environment free of shoes, electrical cords and children's toys; expect to find a tooth or two lying around. Their bladders have matured and they should be able to go most if not all night without an accident. The puppy's ears should now be up fully (if they are not, you have a Phalene and not a Papillon), although they may have gone through several stages where they'll go up or down (not always both ears at the same time). By time they are 10 months, they’ll start getting their 'adult coat'. It comes in rich, full and gorgeous. The Papillon will start to calm down some and you’ll notice their tail getting fuller. They'll have reached their full size between 7-12 months and will continue to grow in beauty and grace. They still enjoy a good chew toy, but should be over the worst of their teething. The Papillon will start some fringe, but it often doesn’t come in full until they are 2-3 years old. The adult Papillon is elegant and graceful gaining attention where ever they go. They should be loyal but friendly and an excellent companion. Please understand, I don't offer my 'older puppies' on SALE because they are not worth as much, but because they are diamonds in the rough and you need to have a bit of faith to see their true beauty. They will become a beautiful, polished 'butterfly' dog that is loyal and faithful to the end. -Robin Herd I am now using NuVet Plus for all my dogs and I highly recommend it.
